2003 NHL ENTRY DRAFT SPECIAL COVERAGE

Panthers Fans Hit the Road to Nashville

There was no doubt in Scott Scowden's mind where he would be on June 21st, 2003. Ever since that first Monday in April, when the Florida Panthers won the #1 selection in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Scowden knew he would be at Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville attending the draft. An avid Panthers fan from West Palm Beach, Scowden had one last question to be answered before he embarked on his journey, who was going to go with him? Enter Sean Atteberry, Dan Duecker and Jason Lemieux (no relation to Mario), all good friends of Scowden's and huge Panther fans. So, on June 19th, Scowden, 19, Atteberry, 18, Duecker, 19, and Lemieux, 20, departed at midnight and headed on up to Nashville. What ensued during the next three days was what Scowden called, "the most fun weekend of my life."

The plan for the guys was pretty simple: Every three hours the person in the passenger seat would take over the driving duties. Then, that person would have to fill up the gas tank regardless of how much fuel was remaining (usually $10 per fill up). The two people in the front of the car had to stay awake, while whoever was in the back grabbed a chance to snooze.

Instead of taking the standard route due north to Nashville, Scowden and the guys opted to make the most of their trip and take a more scenic path through the Carolina's. Scowden remembers a particular incident of spontaneity while driving through North Carolina: "We saw a sign that read 'Hot Springs' somewhere in North Carolina and decided we would go take a dip in them. At a gas station, we ask the clerk about the Hot Springs and where we could find them. She pointed us in the right direction and described them as 'nice & real warm.' After an hour and fifteen minute drive through the mountains, we found a sign reading 'Welcome to Hot Springs, North Carolina.' There were no Hot Springs, just a town called Hot Springs. We decided not to go back and thank the lady."

The guys arrived in Nashville at around 7 P.M. on Friday and stayed at a hotel Scowden described as " a hole in the wall place." They took to the town that night looking for a good time. What the non-country-music-fans got instead reminded them of a musical rodeo. "It was a little too country for us," Scowden said. "We were only out for a little while before our lack of sleep caught up with us and we called it a night to prepare for the big day."

After catching up on their sleep, the guys made it to the Gaylord Entertainment Center at 10:30 A.M., two and half-hours before the start of the draft. "We sat at the far end of where the stage was, in the upper deck, hanging these two huge FLORIDA PANTHER banners from the balcony," said Scowden. "One banner was tied using string from a pair of shorts and another was tied using a pair a of sandals." Even Panther officials and scouts noticed the banners from the arena floor.

As for the draft itself, Scowden believes the Panthers came out on top. "We came out of this so well," said Scowden. "I mean, we got the guy we wanted, the guy I wanted too I might add (Nathan Horton), got something in return (Mikael Samuelsson from Pittsburgh), and something people tend to forget, we prevented a potential franchise goalie (Marc-Andre Fleury) from being in our division (with Carolina). That's two years in a row (GM Rick) Dudley has done an amazing job at the draft."

The fun for the guys didn't stop there though. After the draft, Scowden and his travel crew got a chance to meet Panthers top pick Nathan Horton. "Meeting Nathan Horton was definitely the highlight of the weekend. He's such a nice guy and he had a smile from ear to ear. He took a picture with us and signed my stick which was already signed by Stephen Weiss and Jay Bouwmeester."

After the exciting time at the draft, the quartet hit the road and headed back home. You would think after all these guys had done that they were ready to get back home ASAP, but they had one more little adventure up their sleeves. After staying Saturday night in Atlanta, they headed to Six Flags over Georgia, for a day of fun, fast and exciting roller coasters. "It was great," said Scowden. "All the lines were only about fifteen minutes long."

Finally, the hard-core Cat fans called it a weekend and headed back to Florida. Scowden, a sophomore at The University of Central Florida, arrived in Orlando at 5:30 A.M., just in time for his 9 A.M. exam. Well, you've got to ask him: Was it worth it all? "Oh yeah," Scowden said. "I'll definitely be at the draft next year, too." No word yet on how he fared on his early morning exam. We anxiously wait for Scott to report his results to us. Atteberry, Duecker and Lemieux made it safely back to West Palm later that day.

We were lost for 4.5 hours in D.C. It was a really awesome city, but way too confusing. The architecture on the buildings was awesome.

We almost got assassinated by Secret Service, but managed to place our stamp on a bus that almost hit us.

We are in an internet cafe right now and don't want to pay to use the internet anymore. We will use our cell phone internet connection to update the captions for all the pictures after we cross the border later today.

Ryan and Dan drove into the city and, with Scott in sean sleeping in the back, were going to drive right up into the mountains but they woke up and we went to breakfast. Sean didn't notice that there were snow covered mountains in the distance so when we got going again Scott and him started playing the pS2 and when he finally looked up we were in the mountains and shortly after he was hanging out the window taking pictures of the snowy mountains. Most definitly the high light of the trip for Sean was seeing the snow covered mountains appear over the horizon, he took so many pictures it was rediculous. We had a blast playing in the snow but the altitude whooped us real quick. We stayed in the mountains for about 2 and a half hours and then went to Ryans aunt and uncles house where we stayed the night. We went to dinner at South of the Boarder and we happend to sit next to some chicas bonita but they were with mommy, but as they were leaving Dan being the nice guy he is decided to holla...literally. It went kinda like this:

Dan: Hey...Hey girls!!!

Hot Chica: Yeah

Dan: Were going to see Shrek 2 wanna go

Hot Chica: uhhh what do you want my number or something

Dan: NO, we are going to the movies right here (points in direction) we will meet ya all there. Were from Florida we don't care if you come or not.

Hot Chica: Um ok (walkes away with confused look on her face.)

Pictures from the Indorphine show at AKA Lounge on November 6th, 2004. This was one of the best Indorphine shows I have ever been to. The stage was so small that Indorphine played on the floor with the fans. We were so close that Sean almost got hit in the face with a guitar.
